Melatonin and ADHD , side effects, overdose and children information.
The idea of melatonin and ADHD treatment is gaining ground fast, as many health practitioners are beginning to recommend melatonin supplements to parents with ADHD affected kids to help get them to sleep.
ADHD which is an abbreviation for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a behavioral disorder in children. Any child afflicted with this disorder is hyper active, cannot concentrate on a task and complete it, cannot organize him or herself, talks a lot, fidgets and is very disobedient and defiant to authority.
The Melatonin Connection.
Melatonin as you may already know is a natural occurring hormone in the body and it is produced by the pineal gland at the onset of darkness. Melatonin also acts as a very powerful antioxidant in the body, for more information on that see Melatonin: An Anti-Oxidant?
Melatonin is now available in the form of a dietary supplement and these days you will hear a lot of terms like melatonin for insomnia, melatonin and jet lag and even melatonin and cancer symptom management. melatonin supplements has been known to calm the body and induce sleep.
Kids with ADHD are hyperactive and get little or no sleep at all. They jump, play and fight throughout the day and when the night comes for rest they hardly get any. This is where melatonin supplements come into play. Let me state here that there have been reports from recent research that states that children with ADHD do not have enough melatonin production and that is why they are hyper-active at night. This for now is only a medical hypothesis.
Melatonin Dosage for ADHD Kids.
Just like in adults melatonin dosage differs from person to person. The standard melatonin dosage for kids suggested by medical experts is 0.5mg per night administered 1 hour before sleep. In some cases parents have administered dosage as high as 3-5mg without any “melatonin side effects.” Melatonin supplements do not really have side effects so you should not be bothered about that.
You have to find what works for your child and stick with it, and please avoid melatonin overdose.
There have been cases where parents report administering too much melatonin to their kids and they got a reverse result, the child stayed up all night! So, be careful.
Melatonin and ADHD Drug Interactions.
Melatonin administration to kid’s with ADHD can be a delicate matter as melatonin and drug interactions can be dangerous. A drug interaction is simply a state where two drugs meet in your body that can have adverse effects on your health.
Below you can find a list of ADHD drugs that are dangerous to mix with melatonin supplements. They include,
Antipsychotic Medications: many of these medications are now being used in treating children with ADHD and Bipolar disorder
- Blood Pressure Medications
- Blood-thinning Medications, Anticoagulants
- Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
- Steroids and Immunosuppressant Medications
- Antidepressant Medications
If your child is on any of the above medications you would have to seek a doctor’s consent before administering melatonin supplements to avoid trouble.
