I recieve questions from my readers on the standardmelatonin dose for insomnia and jet lag.

How should adults use it and how often can kids take it?

People use melatoninsupplements for all kind of health reasons. I can categorize melatonin users into 4 groups.

1. First, there is the insomnia group. These are people whogenerally lack good sleep at night.

2. Thenthere’s the jet lagfellas, people who often jettison the planet andfind it hard to adjust tosleep patterns in the new time zones.

3. Thethird group is peoplewho use melatonin for specialized purposes suchas the management of breastcancer, prostate cancer, Heart Disease,Rheumatoid Arthritis, AttentionDeficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), High Blood Pressure,Depression, Sarcoidosis, Epilepsy Management, Schizophrenia, Menopause and Osteoporosis.

4. The Fourth group is peoplewho use melatonin supplements for sun burn and anti-aging.

Ifyou have attemptedto use melatonin you will findout that there is little or noinformation on melatonin dosage on the internetor elsewhere.

The simple reason is thatmelatonin supplement is a “supplement” and not a standard drug.

How then do you determine the right dosage for you?

Itypically use 3-5 mgfor insosome mnia but have some friends who take upto 20 mg per night and have experienced no side effects.

I amnot a healthprofessional but here are some recommendations I was able togather after research on melatonin dosage depending on what you want to use it for.

Before you read on, youshould know that if  it’s yourfirst timeusing melatonin you should start withsmall doses and workyour way upwards till youhave the desired effect.

Melatonin Dosage for Insomnia andSleep Deprivation.

Adults.

The standard dosage formelatonin in adults is 0.3-5mg and it should be used in the evening.

In rare cases 10mg-30mghas been used with no side effects, but I do not advise it!

Children.

Childrenshould be givendosages less than 0.3mg 1 hour before bedtime. Forteenagers between the agesof 15-20 you may increase their dosage ifnecessary to 5mg maximum.

Melatonin Dosage for Jet Lag.

Thestandard melatonindosage for jet lag in days is half the time zonesyou cross plus one. Thissimply means that if you cross six time zonesyour melatonin dosage when youarrive your destination will be 6/2 +1=4 days.

I recommend that you startwith the recommended adult dosageof about 0.3-5mg.

Lower melatonin dosesapply to children too in cases of jet lag.

Specialized uses of Melatonin.

Melatonin is also used to managepatients with advanced diseases.The dosage will be determinedby the specialist or a doctor.

Ifyou use melatoninsupplements for sundry purposes such as to treat sunburn or for anti-aging youmay consult the required experts fordosage.

No matter what you usemelatonin for you just have to be reasonable and avoid overdose.
