Sleep Maintenance Insomnia is a condition where you can easily fall asleep but you often wake at night without any intrusion from any person or object and cannot go back to sleep.
Like the name depicts, it means you cannot maintain a normal sleep pattern and so you wake at night and can’t go back to sleep.
Insomnia is Frustrating!
The Effects of Insomnia can be burdening on the body.
Sleep Onset Insomnia on the other hand differs from Sleep Maintenance insomnia as this is a condition where you find it very hard to fall asleep at all. There have been cases where individuals suffer from both conditions, thereby creating a terrible night time and often a sad and groggy day.
This kind of insomnia is very common amongst the elderly. There are other kinds of insomnia like, Chronic, Transient and Primary Insomnia’s. See my types of Insomnia Page for more information.
Causes of Sleep Maintenance Insomnia.
This kind of insomnia can be caused by a number of factors including, alcohol or nicotine replacement therapy, smoking, alcoholic beverages and even coffee. Another major cause is sleeping pills. Sleep Pills can be abused by insomniacs that are frustrated and think that ingesting more sleeping pills will give them sleep.
This is not true. The most important lesson to learn about insomnia is that it is a symptom and not a disease. Most times there always is an underlying illness of which insomnia is just a symptom.
Other causes include;
Stress and depression.
Stress or Depression can disturb the REM cycle and cause this kind of insomnia that causes you to wake in the middle of the night.
Restless Legs Syndrome.
This is a condition where you have restless legs at night and often feel a vibrating sensation in your legs. This happens a lot in the early hours of the morning thereby causing insomnia.
Sleep Apnea is a condition where you cannot breathe properly during sleep. Because of the lack of oxygen, your brain knows this is dangerous condition and has to wake you so you can breathe. In most cases people with insomnia cannot go back to sleep after an awakening.
Though Sleep Maintenance Insomnia is a unique type of insomnia, its treatment is the same as the other forms of insomnia.
You might think that swallowing sleeping pills is the first solution to sleep problems. Sleeping Pills are dangerous and the side effects are too many to count. Sleeping pills should be the last option.
