What does melatonin do for your body is critical question.
Melatonin controls the sleep wake cycle.
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland and it controls the body’s sleep-wake cycle.
This simply means that it determines when you sleep and wake. The pineal gland, which is located at the back of the brain, releases melatonin when you are in a dark place. This takes place mostly at night, thereby inducing sleepiness.
Melatonin is an anti-oxidant.
There are certain rascal electrons in the body called free radicals. These free radicals are orphaned electrons that are no longer attached to atoms. What they do is that they move around cells and create much havoc as they go in your tissue, skin and organs. Anti-Oxidants are the cops that police the free radicals by reducing the effects of oxidation that produces these free radicals. What does Melatonin do? Melatonin has been discovered to have anti-oxidation properties, which makes it a very important hormone in the body. See my melatonin anti-oxidant page.

Reports also state that melatonin delays puberty in teenagers. Some other reports also state that melatonin affects the proper function of the ovaries in women with amenorrhoea (absence of periods).
Melatonin and the Immune System.
Melatonin seems to accentuate the immune system by inducing the production of immunity cells called T cells and it also causes the production of interleukin 4 chemical, which is vital to how your immune system operates.

Melatonin has been shown to protect the body against cancerous tumor growth especially testicular, ovarian and breast cancers. Melatonin is also now being used in cancer management and treatment. See my melatonin and cancer page for more information.

Melatonin is now being recommended to parents of kids with adhd. Melatonin has been shown to help them sleep, but an overdose might cause the child to stay awake throughout the night. See my melatonin and adhd page for more information.
